In 2015 the Conyngham family partnered with the US drinks company Brown Forman to build Slane Irish Whiskey, a distillery and visitors’ centre in the grounds of the famed Slane Castle in Co. Meath.

Historic Whiskey Distillery

The Client

This project involved repurposing a protected structure into a state-of-the-art modern distillery and identifying opportunities for greater sustainability.

How PEMCAS Delivered

We used detailed 3D models to ensure that equipment, interconnections and personnel interfaces would work within the footprint available. This enabled us to detect potential clashes at the design stage, and to accurately specify off-site manufacturing of components.

We installed a new sprinkler and deluge system to protect the business continuity of the distillery.

We were also involved in creating a system to collect and store rainwater for use in some distilling processes, and we designed a salmon ladder for the local river, to ensure that the local salmon population would not be negatively affected by the project.

Key Insights

With so many separate and delicate processes involved in whiskey-making, an appreciation for process was everything on this project, as well as a creative approach to using space in a sympathetic way.
