Data Centre Feasibility Study

The Client

NUI Galway is a third-level teaching and research institution based in Galway city. Its campus is located on multiple sites, and some of the facilities have been in use for many years. To facilitate continued growth and development, the client engaged PEMCAS to review existing IT facilities, particularly data centres, and make recommendations for improvements

Energy efficiency was a key driver for the study, as was the necessity for IT systems to remain operational during any work.

How PEMCAS Delivered

PEMCAS carried out a detailed on-site survey, including thermal analyses, to map the existing data-centre configuration and make recommendations for improving the existing network and for expanding it with minimal disturbance to operations.

The study and report formed the basis for internal stakeholder discussion and strategy development. CapEx funding was subsequently made available, a public procurement process was carried out, and implementation of the works commenced.

Key Insights

As a major university providing complex IT services, NUI Galway occupies a specialised position in terms of operational requirements, funding and stakeholder engagement. Preparing a feasibility study in light of these factors was an interesting and exciting challenge, requiring creative problem-solving as well as clear client communication.
