Setting New Standards: Ireland's First LEED-Certified Distribution Centre

In a ground-breaking achievement for sustainable architecture in Ireland, PEMCAS, in collaboration with Keldin Engineering successfully completed the country's first LEED-certified distribution centre for IPUT Real Estate PLC at Aerodrome Business Park, Dublin. This project represents a significant milestone in eco-friendly construction and operational efficiency.

Innovative Design and Sustainability

At the heart of the project was a steadfast dedication to combining innovative design with sustainability. This commitment was realised through the implementation of high-efficiency energy systems, which were a cornerstone of the project's ethos. The design incorporated advanced mechanical and electrical services, meticulously planned to optimise reliability, enhance staff comfort, and ensure robust fire safety measures. These systems were engineered not just for operational efficiency but also with a keen focus on reducing the environmental impact.

Achieving Gold LEED Accreditation

One of the project's most notable accomplishments was attaining the Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation. This globally recognised certification is a testament to the project's adherence to the highest standards of sustainability and energy efficiency. Achieving this level of LEED accreditation involved meeting a series of stringent criteria, encompassing various aspects of sustainable construction and operation. These criteria included efficient water usage, energy conservation, reduction in CO2 emissions, improved indoor environmental quality, and the use of sustainable materials.

A3 BER Rating and BREEAM Accreditation

In addition to the LEED accreditation, the project achieved remarkable success in other sustainability metrics, including an A3 Building Energy Rating (BER) and a 'Very Good' BREEAM accreditation. The A3 BER rating indicated that the facility was among the top performers in terms of energy efficiency, a crucial factor in reducing operational costs and environmental impact. This rating was a result of the project's comprehensive approach to energy management, encompassing everything from the building's insulation and heating systems to its lighting and appliances.

BREEAM, or the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method, is a leading global standard for assessing buildings' environmental performance. Together, these accolades affirmed the facility's standing as a model of energy efficiency and environmental performance, setting it apart as a leader in sustainable building practices.

Implications for Irish Construction and Real Estate

This project is not just an accomplishment for PEMCAS, Keldin Engineering and IPUT Real Estate but sets a new benchmark for the construction and real estate sectors in Ireland. PEMCAS's achievement in completing Ireland's first LEED-certified distribution centre is a testament to the possibilities within sustainable construction and design, offering inspiration and a roadmap for future projects.
