Client & Project Overview
SPE is a busy precision engineering company with an established manufacturing operation and a clear need to grow. To meet increasing demand, the company planned a major extension to its existing facility, doubling its original size. While the objective was straightforward—more space and improved capability—the context made the project challenging.
The business supplies customers who operate within the highly regulated aviation industry, meaning quality controls, fire safety, and licensing requirements were central to the design. In addition, the site presented legacy brownfield constraints that needed to be carefully managed. All of this had to be achieved within a tight programme while allowing the business to continue operating without disruption.
PEMCAS was appointed to support the project from the earliest stages through to delivery, providing planning support, fire safety, mechanical and electrical engineering, health and safety, construction management, and assigned certifier services. This integrated approach allowed the project to progress in a coordinated and practical way.
A key success factor was progressing design and procurement alongside licensing and statutory approvals rather than waiting for each stage to complete in sequence. PEMCAS worked closely with the local authority throughout, maintaining open and proactive communication to address questions early and avoid delays. This approach helped secure planning permission and fire safety certificates within the required timeframes and allowed construction activities to move forward with confidence.
Key Insights
Projects like this rely less on complex solutions and more on clear thinking, good coordination, and strong relationships. SPE’s extension showed the value of understanding regulatory requirements early and dealing with them directly through open engagement with statutory bodies.
Having a multidisciplinary team under one roof meant decisions could be made quickly and problems resolved without unnecessary handovers. Acting as a single point of contact also simplified communication for the client, freeing them to focus on running their business. The result was a well-managed project that met regulatory requirements, stayed on programme, and delivered practical, long-term value for the client.
